Ramadhan

Assalamualaikum,

wahh it has been a looooong time since I posted. First of all I want to convey my Salam Ramadhan to those who still reads my blog. :)..I am truly touched to see that so many still read this blog. My heart goes to all of you. Thank you so much. Mamak and I are doing fine and since it's Ramadhan, we would like to ask for forgiveness, kalaulah kami terkasar bahasa, tersilap kata, offended or hurt anyone's feelings. Maaf Zahir Batin.

Update :

I actually am still alive, to those who are wondering. Haha. I was just fully concentrating on my studies. Honestly, I haven't opened my own blog AND haven't visited any other blogs since I posted my last entry. Talk about determination.

The thing is, as you guys know, I swing my way back home and school. Also I had to study in German and that means, three times the workload of a normal students. It takes a lot of time trying to balance home and school at the same time, so I told myself I had to concentrate on some things and leave other things as they are for a while.

Unfortunately I decided to leave my blog as it was and come back when I have the time. I miss blogging teribbly and I miss interacting with my blogreaders too. But I was determined. Alhamdulillah, I finished my semester, sat for 6 exams plus one Lab and syukur kepada Allah, I got 5 of my exams and my one lab results and I passed  all of them!! Now I'm waiting for my last results, and hopefully I will pass that one too.

Ramadhan is great. Sini at the end of summer, so fasting time is rather long. Mamak had a little problem fasting for 17-16 hours masa awal Ramadhan, but Alhamdulillah he's what the german calls 'Tapfer', meaning tak mudah patah semangat. Ada la dia tinggal dua tiga hari sbb tak larat akibat kerja (don't tell him I told you..haha..) but I am so proud of him still.

Skarang ni I am enjoying my summer holidays at home until end of September, which is cool because I start class after raya. So fasting is no problem since I just stay at home and do nothing. Well not exactly nothing, I am going for driving class in the evenings. My malaysian liscence is only valid for the first six month residence in Germany so obviously mine is not valid anymore. I'll have to take theorie and practical exams again to get my german driving liscence.  To think that I had it all behind me...haha. So now I have to actually attend driving classes with 17 year olds and that makes me feel so very young. NOT.

We also bought a 12 year old VW Lupo for a very little money (all the we could afford), which I call KODOK because it is bilious green, from Mamaks little brother who inherited the car from their late Atok. The car is old, the paint is beaten up, we had a casette player radio which we had to remove because it was messing up the car battery and now we have a hole with cables in it, no air-cond but thank god for the heater, roll windows, 1.0 engine and we love it. The kodok is responsible to take me to school next semester, meaning I have to pass my driving exams first.

Foodwise, I have been cooking the same things in ramadhan. Nothing new. We tend to eat more malaysian food, since both of us are homesick, home as in Penang. Watching Shamsul Ghau-Ghau at Bazar ramadhan on tv3 online does not help ease the pain but we watch it anyway.

Here's what I made two days ago.

In penang this what the people call 'Coq Kucai'

This one I made using a recipe from Foodbeam. So it's the stylish version of coq kucai la. Instead of the cream cheese used in the batter, I used fullfat yoghurt. Sedap. Crunchy on the outside, soft inside. I put in the fridge and reheat in the toaster oven of sahoor, still soft and crunchy.

Until next time!!

Cok Kodok Apple

We had a late lunch yesterday of kuey teow sup and shrimp dumplings. Sorry naa, tak ambil gambar pun, sebab sama ja rupa dia dengan dumpling yang buat hari tu. Hehe..

So for dinner I made some cekodok apple, which was so yummy. Tak sangka the batter came out so fluffy because I used resepi hentam keromo saja.

I put very little sugar in the batter sbb takut hangit, so they were not sweet enough. So I sprinkled lots of powdered sugar on them. So yummy, sugary sweet with a light sour flavour from the apples.

------------------------

Cok Kodok Apple recipe:

1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup cold water
2 tablespoon sugar
1 large apple, skinned, sliced and diced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

method:
Combine flour, salt, sugar and cold water in a large bowl. It should have a sticky texture, since the apples will add some water to the mixture. Mix in the diced apples and stir until batter coats everything. Now if the batter is too sticky, you may add a little water and if too runny, add more flour. Add the baking powder and mix thoroughly one last time. Preheat oil in a deep frying pan, about 2 inches deep. Spoon apple mixture into the oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes. Lay them on kitchen towel and sprinkle powdered sugar before serving.

(ps: in Germany, fluid cooking oil sold, for instance cornoil of raspoil, are not suitable for deep frying because they are not heat-stable, that means they will burn and smoke at high temperature. To deep fry dishes like this one, I recommend using solid oils, usually made with palm oil, available at refrigerated section at stores, usually near butter)

Mango Pudding Tart

Tadaaa..tayang sikit mango pudding tart neh. Ni buat setelah penat mengentel dumplings bertuah itteuw. Patutnya pakcik insurance nak singgah kejap petang semalam, tapi kitorang tunggu punya tunggu punya tunggu (sila baca style Pramlee dlm cerita Seniman Bujang Lapok ya), pakcik insurance tak timbul-timbul. Kekdahnya dia terlupa, tadi baru dia telepon habaq.

So rezeki kami berdua lah baham tart mango ini. Resepi ni ilham website ni, tapi dah di'oter' akibat ada a few things tak available kat pantry. Yang ada mango dalam tin saja, so terpaksa la guna creativiti. I don't have any gelatin or serbuk agar-agar kat rumah, so I use vanilla pudding, I added some mango puree to it. The crust I made exactly according to the recipe.

I topped the tart with more mango puree and then leave it to set in the fridge. Hasilnya amat memuaskan, optik sebelum dipotong memang otai, rasa pun sedap, lemak manis. My favourite part is the crust, made of normal short pastry cuma tambah coconut flakes. Memang kena la dengan manis mango tuh.

Probably sebab mango puree kat atas tart tu banyak sangat, terjadilah 'landslide' reaction antara pudding ngan mango puree tuh bila dipotong. Hehe. Apapun, tart ni sedap dan sangatlah senang, I will make it again. Maybe next time I will use serbuk agar-agar bagi set sikit pudding tu.

I'm Back Home

Yesterday, after a little schedule mix-up, I checked my current schedule online. There were so many changes that I had to organize my whole jadual waktu all over again. I ended up having only one subject on friday morning, which is pretty annoying. Ya la kan, kalau hari jumaat takdak subject, malam khamis dah bleh cabut balik rumah..hehe.

Aaanyway, pagi tadi pergi kelas seperti biasa and then as usual I checked out the latest notice online, in case kelas cancel ke hapa. Not to my surprise, kelas petang hari ni and jumaat pagi tu cancel, cikgu takdak. I guess its normal first week kelas ada yang cancel, lepaih ni, jangan harap la.

Ces tui!..Tunggu la kita exam nanti, huhu...time tu baru dia tau bila dah rindu nak makan kari...muahaha. Sapa nak goreng papadom time tuh!..

Anyway, terus ku hambik packet kek instant Dr. Oetker yang dah nak expired tu and baked this cake. Kitchen therapy. This is called Russischer Zupfkuchen or Russian Cheesecake, but its really a traditional German cake. Ada la tu keturunan russian yang dok Jerman zaman dulu-dulu tu kot yang bawak kek ni ke Jerman. Hehe..pepandai ja buat cerita ek.

Its a cheesecake made from Quark or fresh white cheese curd with chocolate flavoured short pastry crust. As the name says Zupfkuchen, you are to zupfen or pluck some of the short pastry dough and scatter them at the top of the cake.

The cake taste pretty light because it is made with fresh cheese curd instead of cream cheese. I just love the colour constrast.

Mamak yang introduced this cake to me. He really loves this cake, masa baru-baru kenal dia dulu, he baked this cake and bawak pi tmpt kerja for us. Muahaha..time tu mati-mati ingat dia buat kek ni from scratch. Tipah tertipu. Since then, just like him, I have never made it from scratch. Maybe one day, but thank Dr. Oetker, I (or we) make the perfect Russicher Zupfkuchen everytime. So easy and really really good! When I do make one from scratch, I will surely share it here with you guys.

Oh well, time to enjoy being home!

Until next time.

Tchüss!

Tolak van and Tarte Tatin

Semalam kami berdua menjalankan aktiviti pindah randah. I've rented a room at flat near my school, from a girlfriend who's currently doing her practical semester right now. So I'll be there through the week to go to school and balik rumah at the weekends..huhu..so sad kan? I'm being strong just by thinking "It's all for our future". Hopefully by next semester, I'll get my german driving license and we'll get a car, so that I can travel back and forth to school from home. At the moment we don't really have a choice lah, since the bus connection is teribble eventhough rumah tak jauh mana pun.

Hari selasa ni akan start kelas, I was moving some of my stuff with mamak yesterday, with the company van yang dah usang itu (hasil pinjaman dari tmpt kerja mamak, atas budi bicara bos mamak, encik misai). Van itu amatlah usang, tapi tak berani nak ambil gambar sbb van company..muahaha. Nak dijadikan cerita, both of us went to shop for groceries, alang-alang dah ada transport kan. Mamak tried to start the van and it didnt budge. Tercengang kami sebab van usang tu takleh nak start. So at the parking lot Kaufland semalam, terjadilah aksi mami tolak van buruk tapi besar itu..muahahahhaa. Alhamdulillah, the motor ran, we all sempat drive balik rumah and sent the car back safely. Of course we informed Encik Misai about the incident, dengan selamba Encik Misai kata "awat tak katok-katok skit kat enjin tu" dgn slang germannya itu. Adeh, manala kami tau nak katok tang mana. Ish ish ish..

Aaanyway, I'm still at home, enjoying my last Sunday with my husband as a free soul, before I start my life back again as a Student. I made the french version of apple pie today. Something like the upside down pineapple cake, but instead of cake, I use pastry crust. Here's the actual recipe, but as usual I sort adjusted it. Instead of one big pie, I made two small individual pies. Senang, sorang satu..haha..takyah gaduh-gaduh.

I didn't use eggs for the pie crust, just for funsies. Still the crust tasted good, maybe next time I will try with eggs, just to compare. :). Some recipes uses puff pastry, which is probably lighter and yummier, cause the pastry could soak the dripping caramel.

Well, its pretty easy to make and I would recommend this to any hobby bakers who loves fruit pies or tarts. Ours was not bad, served warm with a cup of coffee, just heavenly.

Besok kami balik ke uni semula, mamak took a few days off from work, so he'll be there with me sampai hari rabu. Merasa husband hantar pegi skolah..muahahah.

Update and Apple pie

Wah letihnya!!! Hehehe..ni la akibat lama sangat berhibernasi dan berholiday kat rumah, muscle semua dah lembik, jalan banyak sikit dah start semput. Bukan apa, yesterday I was out the whole day by myself, I went for personal registration at the uni untuk dpt kad matrix and etc. Lama dah tak independent gitu. For the last six months, pergi mana-mana, mesti ada Mamak at my side, tagging along. So it felt a little weird going around by myself, I was so independant for the last six years, skarang ni dah jadi MANJA! Eww..Sila muntah ya..hehe. I guess its normal for couples who just got married, to want to mengharap berteman 24/7. Ya kah?

Anyway, setelah naik bas berejam (uni is not so far, since I live in kampung, the bus connection is very bad), the whole registration process only took about 10 minutes, which is not good, because by the time I checked the bus connection home, I had to wait another 3 hours before the next bus. Arghh!!! Berejam berwindow shopping, seb baik ada kedai jual kitchen utensil, dpt la jamu mata sikit. Dua pisau kecil Victorinox ku rembat sebabkan murah..hehe..By the time I got home, I was hungry, kepala berdenyut and letih gila. Kalau zaman blom kahwin dulu, sanggup pergi München, pergi balik 6 enam jam naik train ye puan-puan, semata-mata nak shopping dalam kesejukkan December. Balik rumah relax ja. La ni my body dah out of tune, nak pergi shopping lelama pun dah malas. So semalam after dinner, telan panadol dua biji dek kepala dok berdenyut tak berhenti, 10:30 malam dah gone. Not gone forever ye, hehe..alhamdulillah, pagi ni my headache dah clear.

And since this blog was meant to be a foodblog not my ramblings blog, I'd like to share my apple pie pics. This one I made petang selasa.

Resepi taram saja. I had to modify a few recipes because I wanted to make a small pie.

We dont have a pie dish, so pakai cake form saja la.

The smell when you bake it is so divine. Wangi gila bau cinnamon and crispy buttery crust.

Kuih Pau

Kuih pau! Kuih pau! Mari mari...

Kuih Pau ni dinner kami berdua semalam. Ni first time buat ni. Selama ni tak berani nak buat sebab kebanyakkan resipi pakai tepung pau atau tepung hongkong, mana la nak dpt kat sini. Baru ni jumpa banyak pula resepi yang pakai tepung gandum biasa, so boleh la nak cuba. Cuma orang kata kalau pakai tepung biasa, pau jadi kekuningan, tak gebueww gitu.

Pau ni inti kari ayam, kertas tu pulak baking paper yang dipotong kecil-kecil.

Dah lama periuk kukus ni sampai dari mesia, ni baru berpeluang nak guna. Hehe..

Ni pau yang dah siap kukus, kembang semangkuk you! Tak budget nak kembang, seb baik tak kukus ramai-ramai sekali, kalau tak memang melekat la jawabnya pau-pau ni. Alhamdulillah dough menjadi. Paling penting, dough ni dah sejuk pun masih lembut.

This time mami mungkin terlalu tamak, roll dough sampai nipis lepas tu taruk inti bebanyak, so bila kembang, bertambah nipis la dough tu. Apa pun, pau ni tak macam beli di kedai, hehe..kalau beli kat kedai, kulit pau bukan main tebal, inti ciput saja. Pau ni inti membuak-buak, seb baik tak pecah..hehe.

Mamak baru first time makan kuih pau ni, katanya dia kena setting lidah sikit, sebab kat Jerman ni ada juga kuih kukus, nama dia Dampfnudel, rasa sebijik macam kuih pau, cuma takdak inti, makan pulak dengan sos vanila dan blueberry compote. So bila makan kuih pau inti kari, dia terasa confuse sekejap..haha.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Pau dough:

250g All purpose flour, diayak
12g Fresh yeast,
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoon shortening (I use veg oil)
125ml warm water *

Method:

Sieve flour, salt and baking powder into a bowl. Mix with sugar. Make a cavity in the middle of the flour mixture and crumble yeast into the cavity. *Pour in some of the water and start kneading. Add the shortening and knead further. *Only add more water if the dough is too dry, you dont have to use up all of the water. Knead until it becomes a soft pliable dough. Place in a bowl, cover with damp cloth and let rise for 30 minutes at a warm place.

After the dough has doubled in size, knead to release the gas in the dough and roll into a log shape. Cut the dough into 6 portions and roll each portions into a ball. At this time, you can prepare the steamer on your stove. I use the rolling pin to flatten the dough into a round shape, fill the dough with filling and use fingers to gather up the edge and pleat to seal the pau. Place the pau on a small piece of paper (I use baking paper). When the water in the steamer boils, steam them for 10-15minutes.

Pizza Dinner

DSC_0002
For dinner tonight, I made stuffed crust pizza. Inti mortadella sausage, olives ngan bawang. Cheese sememangnya wajib, campur fresh mozarella ngan grated gouda.

DSC_0005
Crust stuffed dengan mozarella (Hidup Lemak!!)

DSC_0011
Gamaknya mami kedekut sangat bab stuffing cheese into the crust, cheese tu tak tangkap leleh macam dlm iklan pizahat. Walaubagaimanapun, rasanya memang bes. I ate two pieces and mamak 3 pieces, the rest tu buat makan tengah hari besok. Huhu..selamat takyah masak.
Layan je lah gambo tu!..hehe

Mee Goreng Mamak dan Cinnamon rolls

Hari ni mami goreng mee goreng mamak for lunch. Malas punya pasal, coq udang mahupun coq bawang tinggal kenangan saja..hehe. Mee pulak pakai spaghetti saja (rindunya kat mee kuning). Walaubagaimanapun telur goreng takleh dipisahkan dengan mee goreng mamak, sebab kalau mami order mee goreng kat penang, sure order telur goreng mata kerbau taruk atas.

DSC_0004

Masa lunch I got very good news lah. Surat sudalah sampai dari skolah tinggi, mami bleh sambung blajar. Alhamdulillah! Melompat jugelah, walaupun sedih sebab mami sudah manje-taik asik dok rumah masak makan masak makan, bela lemak. Pasni takleh dah nak all out masok-masok kecuali bila cuti skolah. Pasni blajar kena gambate dan berani mati lah! Ala-ala tiada maaf bagimu gituew. Insya Allah if everything goes well, start skolah 22hb March ini. Doakan diriku ini ye!..

So to celebrate, I baked this cinnamon roll. Lama dah tingin nak buat, tapi tak brani. Ada skali penah buat dulu jadi serupa biskut, ksian temah kawanku, dia makan juge cinnamon roll serupa biskut itu. Ni ghope macam jadik je, gamaknya berbaloi juge painstakingly ikut resepi. Resepi cinnamon roll tu ambil kat sini ye puan-puan.

DSC_0008
Ni baru keluar oven, belum taruk glaze.

DSC_0017
Ni dah dribble glaze. Kalau ikut resepi takboh glaze, tapi tak bes la kan cinnamon rolls takboh glaze. So I mixed 2 tablespoons icing sugar dengan around 1 tablespoon cream, make sure glaze tu runny enough to dribble.

DSC_0015
Ni lak posing lepas glazing. Resepi ni sangat senang dan Cinnamon rolls ni wangi dan lembut, puas hati. Dah sejuk pun masih lembut lagi.

ciao!

Schweineohren translated err..telinga...err...errr...

Untuk mengelakkan kekeliruan saya copy paste saja terus dari dictionary german-english okay,

Schwein (der)
n. pig, hog, swine, pork; jerk, annoying person, slob, clumsy person, filthy person

Ohr (das)
n. part of the body used for hearing; ear

Makanya Schweineohren means pig ears. Yes, itu nama german untuk pastry yang dimaksudkan ini. Orang Perancis panggil Palmiers yang bermaksud palm tree, satu nama yang mungkin lebih comel tapi tidak sensasi seperti Schweineohren itu. He he..

4

Anway, this is sort of our emergency pastry stash yang ada dalam freezer kami. Just plain puff pastry, sprinkled with lots of sugar and dribbled with honey. Pastu gulung camni.

5

Pastu, kami pack each piece individually and freeze them.

(note my cute hand!)

3

Bila selera dah datang tu, just defrost the pastry for 10 minutes, cut them diagonally like this, and sprinkle more sugarand more honey onto them.

1

Susun jauh-jauh sikit from each other, sebab pastry tu will expand as they bake. Shove them in the oven for 10-12 minutes at 200°C.

2

I guess now you see why it's called Schweineohren. Oh, memang tidak setanding dengan Schweineohren yang beli kat bakery (kat bakery ada yang besaq telinga gajah), tapi kalau petang-petang tu tengah craving, memang layan. Especially with a cup of hot coffee.

Oh..sangat berkaramel dan ranggup bercrispy.

Thyme Loaf and Chili con Carne

Semalam buat roti ni Thyme Loaf, basically guna resepi Mat Gebu tapi tukar-tukar sikit. Thanks Encik Mat Gebu, resepi yang kat website tu memang sangat reliable dan tidak pernah mengecewakan.

Thymian Laib

It was suppose to be Onion and Rosemary Bread but I used thyme instead. This is my second time using this recipe, so ingat nak tukar citarasa sikit lah.

Thymian Laib

Thin crispy crust and dalam dia lembut walaupun tak pakai bread improver or softener. The best part is time keluar dari oven. Pergh..wangi.

Chilli con Carne

Kami makan the Thyme Loaf with this Chili con Carne. Jangan tanya resepi naa sebab kami guna rencah instant Knorr saja. Easy peasy.

Eierkuchen a.k.a Lempeng telur

Hari ni makan Eierkuchen for breakfast. This is rather old fashion german breakfast, but when rolled with cream filling, can also be served as dessert.

Eierkuchen ni lebih kurang macam american  pancake, just that the Eierkuchen batter use more eggs than normal pancake batter. Texture pun tak 'spongy' macam pancake sebab tak pakai baking powder. Rasa dia macam a thicker heavier version of crepés.

DSC_0005 copy
 Eierkuchen Recipe:

4 Eggs
250g Flour
400ml Milk (or 300ml Milk + 100ml carbonated water)
Salt

Whisk eggs until frothy and add milk. Mix in the flour, whisk until there's no clumps. Season with a little salt. Fry on the griddle just like pancakes or lempeng.

DSC_0001 copy

Serve hot with any sweet sidekick for instance, nuttela, honey, marmalade, icing sugar or fresh fruits. We ate ours with maple syrup and butter.

Projekt: Roti Sorai

Semalam teringin sangat nak makan roti sorai a.k.a roti jala ni, habis satu rumah diselongkar, nak cari benda yang boleh nak dibuat acuan. Ni lah akibat lupa nak beli acuan roti sorai ni kat malaysia. Penah gak tgk blog-blog lain yang pakai bekas plastik untuk sos tu, yang tu pun takdak kat rumah. Sedih tau mengenangkan nasib diri di perantauan yang dan-dan teringin nak makan roti sorai. Acuan takdak, so nak pakai apa?

DSC_0002 copy

Last-last pake beg plastik saja, ala-ala piping bag gitu. .hehe.

Roti sorai
2 cawan tepung gandum
2 cawan air
1 biji telur
1/4 cawan minyak jagung
garam
kunyit sebagai pewarna

DSC_0001 copy

Hasilnya amat memuaskan hati, walaupun 'benang jala' besaq gajah..huhu.
(Maaf na, frying pan kami dah uzur and season)

DSC_0015 copy

Bila dah siap gulung cam ni, comei la sikit rupa dia. Kami makan dengan kari ayam. Habis  dibedal oleh mamak&mami as dinner semalam...huhu.

Projekt: Doughnutku sudah berjaya...

Ni bukan doughnut biasa ye..Ni doughnut Jarman atau nama sebenar, Berliner. There's a lot of other German terms for this type of 'doughnut' but most of the bakeries here call them Berliner or Krapfen. Its the same yeast dough as a normal doughnut but instead of the familiar donut shape with the hole in the middle, the Berliner is simply round with jam filling and sprinkled with sugar on top.

Some of you probably know about the story of the then American President John F. Kennedy's famous speech in West Berlin in 1963 where he probably wanted to say "I am a resident of Berlin" and the correct term should've been "Ich bin Berliner". Instead he said "Ich bin ein Berliner" which actually means "I am a jelly doughnut." I think its cute, well who doesnt love a jelly doughnut?

Anyway, I tried almost 3-4 times to make doughnuts but this is the first time I succeded. I guess the yeast and I have this love-hate relationship. I got this recipe accidentally, thanks to my foodblog-hopping habit, from the foodblog called deliciousdays. I couldnt do exactly as directed since I dont own certain kitchen apparatus. So I improvised...

Berliner
I made half of the recipe, the dough turns out nicely and this glass was my doughnut cutter...

Berliner
I fry them in a pan filled with 1-inch deep of frying oil. I didn't own a cooking thermometer so I had to use my feelings...haha

Berliner
The sprinkling of the icing sugar was easy...

Berliner
Some we ate just like that...

Berliner
Some we filled with raspberry jam. I didnt have a piping nozzle, so I just cut a slit with a knife and spoon teaspoons of jam into it...

Berliner
The best doughnut I've made by far. Yummy yummy yummy...many thanks to delicious days.
