Ignorance is bliss..or is it?

"Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."

Is it really blissfull to be ignorant? Is it stupid to be wise?
Ceritanya begini, a malaysian student told me the story about her fellow student, a young german girl who wanted to go to Malaysia and spend four weeks there as holiday. So this malaysian student pun akur, since this german girl insist that she wants to go 'see' Malaysia.

So after four weeks jalan-jalan Malaysia, diorang pun balik Germany and I, being my curious self, asked her how it was. This malaysian student starts telling me stories, after one another about her experience with this german girl in Malaysia. Just for info, both of them are 24 years old and are really good students la. Kira geng-geng bijak la ni.

I wont go into details, but basically, she was shocked to see how Malaysians live. Pastu dia kata, dia tak sangka Malaysia is soooo different than Germany. Ermm..okay. They are situated far away from each other kan? Was she seriously expecting Sauerkraut und Bratwurst in Malaysia?? She actually said that she was shocked that she couldn't find anything simillar to Germany in Malaysia. She said the Malaysian culture is komisch which means weird. You see, banyak orang jerman still think that budaya diorang saja yang betul, budaya lain semuanya pelik.

She told my friends mother she does not want to help out in the kitchen sebab dia geli tengok kawan I ni kopek udang. FYI orang jerman tak reti cakap berlapik, they are not trained to, they say what they think and sometimes forgets that human beings have feelings. Anyway, dia geli nak makan steamboat sebab dia kena handle raw shrimps and fish, hmm... I wonder if she has ever cooked before since she's studying Nutrition at the Uni.

Mostly she had problems with the food, which I dont mind sbb ramai tourist macam tuh. So she ended up eating toast and marmalade saja. She told a friend she had to cover her body and leave her shoes outside as she visited an 'indian temple', which later we found out, she was actually talking about Masjid Kapitan Keling in Penang. And the list of unfortunate events followed...

Pheww!..Now, I am talking about a very inteligent girl who is good in school and uni, not someone who is not educated. In the end I just asked myself why she wanted to go to Malaysia in the first place.

Since duduk Germany ni, I have encountered many similar ingorance cases like this one. I really wonder, because some of these questions comes from people who has been in the uni and have important positions at work.

  • Do you speak japanese in your country?..erk..

  • Do you speak german in your country?..wt...erk..ni buat I nak melompat macam Hagemaru nih..

  • Once I used english words to describe something (that time my German was so crappy), a girl asked me what language I was using. I told her English and she says she hates English (the language not the people) and she wont learn it because she doesnt need it anyway...erk!

  • Is Malaysia near Pakistan? I had to draw this girl the world map to show her where Malaysia is. She was impressed and said she can never draw the world map just by remembering...Budak skolah form 3 kat mesia pun bleh lukis punya lah..

  • I know Thailand and Indonesia, but I dont know where Malaysia is....hmm..bummer..

  • Mamak was at a Singaporean restaurant and he heard two women saying, "This Indian restaurant is really good". There was 'Penang curry' on the menu and the lady told her friend " Penang means Coconut". True story!
Aaaanyway, geram jugak rasa hati bila jumpa orang-orang macam ni. I guess they are like that because they feel that they dont need anybody else, since they are in their comfort zone dalam negara sendiri. They dont feel the need to understand other culture. Itu culture, tapi general knowledge kena la ada sikit kan. I wonder what they learn in schools, takkan tak belajar geography kot? Sampaikan kekadang tu India and China pun diorang tak tau kat mana. So most of them end up categorising most asian countries as 'Asian', thinking that every 'Asian' culture is the same. I always end up saying this to my german friends, "You know, Asia is so very big, how can all Asian countries have the same culture?"

We malaysian pulak, sangatlah merendah diri sebab ingat kaum-kaum diorang ni lebih pandai dan bijak dari kita. Patutnya kita bangga as Malaysians, kita ambil tahu , kita merendah diri and kita pandai jaga hati orang. We maybe not as smart, but we are never ignorant.

I think I rather be stupidly wise than blissfully ignorant.

salam mami..

great post for pondering...sometimes I wonder too abt their ignorance or is it arrogance??? but of course, I tak leh buat sweeping statement la coz a segelintir yg tak mcm tu...kita org melayu jugak yg kaya adat sopan, selalunya tak nak kecilkan hati org (err...@ times, boleh kah di-consider lying...hmmm?) tapi pernah jugak encounter foreigners yg sungguh berbudi...dia masuk umah kita pakai selipar, kita tegur..merah padam muka apologies tak sudah..yg geli ati..dia tgk my mom bertudung kat umah (sebab ada tamu), dia keluarkan scarf dia nak lilt kepala...dia ingat ada org tua mesti hormat & pakai) at least her efforts ada gd intentions...eh sowiee eh..terpanjang lebar plak I ngomel...;)

It's so true what you said even kat OZ ni but the igonarnce bit is getting better nowadays. Masa I study kat sini zaman tok hek dulu, memang ramai sgt yg ignorant ni, kadang2 geram sangat2. But nowadays, it's so much better sebab I guess most people can afford to go overseas and there's internet so they are more culturally aware a bit. But still ada gak yg prefer to be ignorant because they think they are so superior! menyampah I!

salam mami...mak cik setuju dgn yat..mereka ni (bukan semua)bukan ignorant tapi arrogant..mereka merasa yg merekalah lebih superior n moden dari kita malaysians.agaknya that german girl tu tak makan shrimp n other sea food ke/saja malas nak masuk dapur macam kat rumah dia hehe..rugilah kalau datang sini tak nak merasa cara hidup n merasa makanan kita kan..
makcik ingat lagi tahun1991 masa tu mak cik keUS ikut uncle study, one american prof. asked me did we have a house in malaysia.ketawa makcik apa dia ingat kita tinggal atas pokok ke..hehe..n I told him that we had a bungalow house n two cars..terdiam dia..ehhh rumah sebuah rumah banglow kan(w/p kecil).bila mak cik berbual dgn neighbour n she told me that she came from Alaska n mak cik beritahulah yg I knew where is Alaska..dia terkejut sebab dia tak tahu where is St. Louis sebab mak cik beritahu yg kita nak pergi SL for a holiday.sorry mami terover sikit ni hehehe..

Hai Mami..

Great great posting. But I guess bukan German je yg rasa mcm tu, lotsa people who think that they are superior actually forget that if you think you're way above others, you shd make the effort to find out whta's going on with other people.

Unfortunately, this kind of situation pun still ada kat negeri kita sendiri sebenarnya. I come from Sarawak and till now, sometimes I get asked questions like 'do Sarawakians wear clothes there?Do you still live on trees there?'. So do my statemates. We ended up wondering what happens in between these people entering school and earning enough to finally have the capability to learn the answers to these q's.

So kitorang jawab pun ikut mood la. Sebab dah terbiasa so dah x amik hati dah. But kalau tengah mood kreatif, so kreatif la jawapan kitorang hehehhe. But good to know that these incidents are now isolated cases rather than common.

So coming back to what you experience, I totally agree that we should hold our heads up high that in actuality, we Malaysians are more worldy and open than them:)

Oopss panjang lak celoteh...sorry:D:)

Ye Mami, since dtg sini, byk sgt impression tah hapa2 org sini terhadap Malaysia. One thing I encountered (tp ngan org turki bukan deutsche) masa amik kelas bahasa deutsch, ada satu minah turki ni tanya kenapa sy dtg jerman. Sy ckp my hb study here dan nanti lepas dah abis, kami balik la. Dia tanya kenapa nak balik? Bukan ke life kat Malaysia susah? I said no, he has job waiting for him and I can back to work too. And ntah cemana i mentioned dulu kami ada sorang satu kereta (bukan nak berlagak sebenarnya). And dia punya muka ternganga mcm x percaya aje. Kalau x kerana ada sorang minah myanmar ni yg dok mengiyakan life kat malaysia xde la sesusah yg dia gambarkan, mesti minah turki ni ingat sy buat cerita. Agaknya pd pandangan dia semua auslander yg dtg jerman ni sbb nak escape kehidupan susah kat negara masing2. Pd dia life kat jerman la yg terbaik kot! Byk lagi la contoh2 ignorance dan menyakit sy encountered sepanjang kat sini tp cukup2 la sebelum sy meroyan...hehehe

Mami, subject Geography tidak merupakan subject wajib kat sekolah2 di Jerman ke?

Or maybe that girl is purely jenis sengal, poyo, perak and what have you. haha.

I like your 'aaaaanyway.."

Salam Yat Maria,

true2! kita melayu jaga hati orang sampai kekadang hati sendiri tak terjaga..

and surely bukan semua org sini macam tu..segelintir saja..just telling stories from my personal experience..:)..I mean kalau mamak camtu, takde de I nak kahwin ngan dia..hahahaha...my parents in law pun alhamdulillah time pergi Malaysia, diorang sangat sporting dan pandai respect budaya kita..

arrogant tu could be a reason, but usually, diorang ni jenis ambik tahu perkara-perkara yang involve life diorang saja..other than that they think tak penting kot..

Dear Kak LG,

I was thinking kat OZ is better than Germany la kot, sbb makin ramai asians yang migrate dok sana....betul la, internet helps..and actually tv too..kekadang I wonder sesetengah diorang ni takkan tak pernah tgk documentary kat tv kot pasal negara lain..kekadang geram sbb terasa macam dipandang rendah...

as you said..Nyampah I!!...

Salam minona Amar Navi...

hehehe..sampai speechless awak ye..hehehe..ish ish ish..

Salam Mak Cik Yam,

mmg stgh tu arrogant, stgh tu ignorant..ada plak yang dua-dua skali..org melayu kata bodoh sombong..hehe..prof yang tanya Makcik yam tu bodoh sombong gak la tu..seb baik mak cik yam baik..kalau saya, saya jawab, a'ah kitorang dok atas pokok dan suka makan biawak dan orang utan..biar dia terkejut skit..hehehe..

saya cuma seriau bila org macam ni dah grad nanti, dpt kerja besar but still with this kind of attitude...bila jumpa org asia, dia akan pandang rendah sbb dia dengan pemikiran dia tu still thinking diorang ni bangsa agung..

Hi Ray,

I tak sangka ada orang yang still camtu kat Malaysia..I still remember I have a sarawakian friend, the guys suka usik dia ..ckp dia dok dlm hutan dengan org utan..but still diorang were just kidding and joking around la..kalau ikutkan my friend tu lagi modern than some of the guys yang dok kat peninsular...hehe..

but in your case, these people were seriously asking you those question, mmg I tak sangka ada lagi orang camtu kat malaysia..so sad kan?..diorang ni tak tgk tv ke aa??

Hi Neny,

I agree with you, orang sini ingat kita orang susah. Datang Jerman sbb nak lari dari kesusahan kat negara sendiri.

Ada pakcik sorang tu pernah tanya, you kalau grad ni kat Malaysia ada orang nak offer kerja ka?..kat German lagi banyak peluang kot..haha...ingat kita ni tak tgk berita ke kat Jerman, wirtschaftkrise bagai..diorang pun bukannya stabil sangat, ramai ja menganggur sbb tak dpt kerja..

Hi Cik Som,

I tanya mamak, he said wajib blajar geography..cam kita jugak la..sampai form 3saja..pastu kalau nak ambik lagi dah tak wajib dah..

I met the girl, actually she's sweet and polite, cuma itula..terlalu comfortable dgn dunia sendiri, bila dah tgk makanan mentah2 tu dia jadi sengal..ya la kat german ni, tahap kenal udang yang dah siap bersih dan packaged saja...

Penang means coconut.. adoihai...

Ehh but really true la Mitha..dulu masa kami di Baden mereka tak tahu dimana Malaysia and kak azi really suprise tau they know where Spore is?

mami said...

Kak Azi,

betul, orang sini lebih kenal indonesia dan singapore daripada Malaysia..saya pernah tanya dulu, diorang kata sbb diorang ingat Malaysia tu muslim country, so kalau nak holiday2 takut takleh pakai bikini..kalau singapore ngan indonesia diorang kata lebih liberal..ntahlah betul ke tak..

hmm..nak kate kementerian pelancongan bersalah, tak jugak...org sini mmg tak interested..pastu bila jumpa kita nih, mulalah macam-macam benda pelik diorang tanya..hahaha..

Kat Sweden lain pulak. Yg ignorance tu mmg ada lah. But lots of Swedes mmg suka gi Thailand. That's why masa tsunami ramai yg mati in 2004 disaster tu. So mostly yg I jumpa mmg opened about culture. Masuk Thai or Chinese groceries shop selamba aje capai kicap lah, fish sauce and benda2 lain.
But again, kalau tak bernasib baik mmg akan jumpa org2 camni. Kat my dept, I guess coz these people ada experience travel to other parts of the world, so diorang tak jakun la.
BTW, ada German friends yg dtg Malaysia in Jan hari tu. Diorang sgt cool! Diorang makan nasi kerabu lagi laju dari I :)
Yang kelakarnya, diorang pun dah terer melintas kat kawasan yg tak berzebra crossing (oh, yg ni I malu as org Malaysia... kereta tak berhenti kat zebra crossing..huhu)

babe...masa aku support ANZ customers ada yang still think we malaysian lives on trees...sedangkan that country punya la ramai asian migrates...so tidak hairan la kalu org kat germany....nie kes 'katak dibawah tempurung' la tuh...all i can say is that God we are blessed with our mindset and the ability to read and discover other cultures

Hi Liyana,

org sini pun ramai yang suka pegi thailand, but Malaysia diorang tak kenal..I guess I am experiencing all this, sbb I dok kampung kecik kot...org kat bandar besar lagi open minded probably...:)

Org german kalau kena gaya mmg sangat cool..muahahaha...sbb tu saya kahwin org german..haha..btw. zebra crossing tu mmg malu, tp masa I pi italy, serupa malaysia saja, tadak sapa guna zebra crossing..haha..because no cars stops at it..

Hi T,

oh american rupanya, I was wondering where you come from..I gueesed that you live in the US tapi tak sure..hehe..cool, the germans will love the extra tip!..

still, I have to admit, my knowledge of afrika is so little, because the continent is so huge..I guess bila jumpa org sana, I will ask weird questions too..but not 'do you speak japanese in your country?'

btw. american food stereotypes in germany are mcdonalds aka hamburgers, cranberries, pumpkin pie and peanut butter..they think you guys only eat these stuffs..

Hunny dear,

Kakak aku pun ada cerita time dia kerja dulu, lots of ANZ customers spoke to her macam depa la baguih..bila dia check address, depa tu dok kampung mana ntah, sometimes pejabat pos pun tarak, sampai D*LL kena pi cari dua tiga kali, sbb tak jumpa rumah..haha..skang ni kan ada google earth, takyah tipu aa kalau dok kampung..muahaha..

i think the ignorance tu originates from the fact that they know they don't need other people (of different culture) to survive. i mean they don't speak english (don't need to), let alone other languages. kita nak pergi tempat dia yang kena belajar bahasa dia. so memang senang nak jadi snob kan? mesti depa rasa high and mighty about themselves.

but of course. tak semualah gitu. :P

bukan germans aje. i think english pun agak direct in talking. takde la nak lapik2 macam kita melayu ni. penuh adab sopan. kengkadang pi kedai kita pulak yang malu walaupun yang salah tu depa. malu tak bertempat. the beauty of being malays :P

mami said...

Hi knv,

you are right, them being independant from other countries makes it better for them to be ignorant. They feel confident, eventhough bukannya terer sangat.

about pi kedai tu, mmg betul, kekadang kita malu tak bertempat, sedangkan takde bende pon..hehe..talking from my experience.
